Meet Benjamin Nedergård – a Data Scientist at Fliq! How did Benjamin end up working at Fliq? What makes machine learning and data science so interesting for him? What is his number one motivation when it comes to working with data? Let’s find out!
Benjamin has studied automation and controller engineering at Aalto University. His interest shifted into the world of machine learning towards the end of his bachelor’s studies.
– When studying for my bachelor’s, my focus was more on automation, but as my master’s degree was getting closer, I started getting more into data science. That’s when I discovered that machine learning is a great combination of both areas that interest me, remembers Benjamin.
During his studies, Benjamin started working for the software development company Devatus, doing mainly software development on Devatus’ newest own project, DeviceVault.
– It was great to be able to do real coding projects, but unfortunately, the topics were not related to data science. I wanted to do my master’s thesis specifically about machine learning, so I started looking for opportunities to do that, tells Benjamin.
While looking for possible companies to pursue his master’s thesis in, Benjamin also got familiar with Fliq. That time, he decided to take on a machine learning project at Vaasan Sähkö for his thesis, but Fliq had made an impression that made Benjamin apply for a job after his thesis was finished.
– Working on machine learning projects is not possible in so many companies in Finland. I noticed that Fliq had some cool projects going on and it seemed like a company where I could further develop myself in this area. I also found smart factories interesting. So, I decided to apply and here I am today, tells Benjamin.
In the long run, Benjamin will be working with projects focusing on machine learning. His work will also include front-end development tasks. Currently he is getting familiar with Fliq’s systems and settling into the company.
Benjamin enjoys the process of finding solutions and the possibilities to solve hard problems in his work.
– It’s satisfying when a tedious task becomes automated with the help of coding, or a machine is able solve a problem that cannot be easily solved by a human. Machine learning takes this whole process to the next level in for example finding patterns in data. It is truly rewarding when you are able to create an algorithm that understands and finds the similarities that a human eye can’t, tells Benjamin.
In the future, Benjamin hopes to keep doing what he loves and wants to feel like his work has meaning in a bigger picture. He is motivated by the possibility to solve real problems – it makes him feel like his code truly matters and is not done just for the fun of doing it.
– I want to become really good at what I do and not be just someone who does this for work. I want to have enough knowledge to be “that guy” – the guy you forward people with their questions if you don’t know the answer yourself. I feel that Fliq is helping me on the road to this by giving me an opportunity to work on challenging projects in this specific area and making it possible for me to constantly learn more, thanks Benjamin.
